The 5-14 Curriculum is currently being reviewed and a number of groups have been formed to examine different areas of the curriculum. Schools have been asked to consider their current practice and to identify issues which will need to be addressed as we move over to the new curriculum.

School staff are enthusiastic about these changes as we believe they will result in a more exciting curriculum for both children and teachers.

The Four Capacities

The new curriculum can be described in the four capacities listed below. Each of these capacities is developed in a series of statements which teachers will need to take account of when planning their curriculum.

In general terms the purposes of A Curriculum for Excellence are to enable all young people to become:

successful learners

with
  • enthusiasm and motivation for learning
  • determination to reach high standards of achievement
  • openess to new thinking and ideas

and able to

  • use literacy, communication and numeracy skills
  • use technology for learning
  • think creatively and independently
  • learn independently and as part of a group
  • make reasoned evaluations
